We spoke with FRNSW 248 Station about a working job they had today in 43 degree temperatures.
On 11/1/17 at 15:59 , FRNSW P248 was responded to an Automatic Fire Alarm at Narellan Town Centre, shortly after turning out redirected at 16:01 to numerous reports of Building Fire at Spring Farm Recycling Centre, along with P88 & Runner 1 who were on a move up at 87 station.
Large volumes of black smoke were visible en route. On arrival a 9 tonne earth mover was found to be fully alight outside a building, with on site staff attempting to extinguish it with a garden hose.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus got to work using a First Aid Reel and 1 x line of 38. The fire was extinguished using 2 x lines of 38mm hose utilising foam.
Whilst extinguishing the fire, crews were challenged with large flames emitting from under the machine when the diesel and hydraulic oil tank dropped from underneath and caught fire. Foam was used to overcome this.
While attending this incident, the outside temperature was more than 40 degrees, crews were required to rotate through roles to prevent excessive heat stress and dehydration. Rural Fire Service were also in attendance.
