Friday the 8th of November 2019 will be a day long remembered. NSW and QLD saw some of the most devastating fires and weather conditions in recent memory. NSW in particular at one point had 17 fires burning at Emergency Warning level, the highest warning level for fires in the state.
That’s 17 separate fires, burning at the highest possible warning level. That’s unheard of.
Conditions were atrocious, with hot temperatures backed by howling winds throughout the day. To give you an insight into just what that looks like when you add fire to the mix, watch this astounding video footage captured by Warringah Pittwater Headquarters brigade from the NSW Rural Fire Service as they lead a strike team onto the fireground. This video was taken as the strike team arrived at Holdens Lane, Rainbow Flat.
For all those firies out there who’ve been working these fires, along with the IMT’s, comms operators, catering brigades and anyone else who has been involved – keep your head up. You’re all doing an amazing job.
I founded Flashover to promote Australian Firefighting. I’ve been a volunteer and a paid firefighter but now I spend my time chasing up leads, promoting good mental health and making the occasional Grumpy Firecom comic!
