This is not your everyday appliance, especially not in major built-up cities in Australia. Introducing the Roma Street 502L, Technical Rescue Unimog! But just what is this beast of a machine?

The Unimog is a 2 seat 4WD technical rescue appliance, stationed at Roma St Queensland, which has been kitted out to service the need for swift water rescue, vertical rescue and search and rescue.

It’s likely the appliance will be moved to the new $6m Bracken Ridge Fire and Rescue station once construction has been completed, but for now, it’s in the engine bay of Roma St.

We’ve had some great photos of the Unimog appliance sent in by Michael Lockett, check them out below!

Check out this video from Emergency service turnouts Australia of the Unimog’s lighting setup.

The Unimog isn’t a new design and similar concepts can be found all over the world, even a few in our own backyard – like this one from the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning Victoria.

If you’ve seen the ‘mog out in the open, or have worked on one of these machines we’d love to hear from you.

I founded Flashover to promote Australian Firefighting. I've been a volunteer and a paid firefighter but now I spend my time chasing up leads, promoting good mental health and making the occasional Grumpy Firecom comic!
